WHAT ARE THE COMMON SYMPTOMS OF HEARING LOSS ?

Initial signs of hearing loss may include:

  • Being able to hear sounds but struggling to understand speech clearly.

  • Difficulty hearing certain sounds or tones—for example, not easily noticing the doorbell or phone ringtone.

  • Trouble following conversations, especially in noisy environments.

  • Difficulty hearing from a distance, such as during meetings.

  • Needing to increase the volume when listening to music or watching television.

Hearing loss has many different causes and contributing factors, depending on which type of hearing loss is diagnosed. The three basic types of hearing loss are Conductive loss, Sensorineural loss and Mixed loss.

Conductive hearing loss: It is caused by impairment of the outer or middle ear that prevents sound from being conducted to the inner ear. Ex: Ear Wax, Infection, etc. This may be temporary or permanent, depending on the cause.

Sensorineural hearing loss: it is the most common type of hearing loss, occurring when there is damage to either tiny hair cells- of the inner ear or the auditory nerve itself, which weakens the transfer of nerve signals to the brain. Ex: Aging, High Noise Exposure, etc. This is mostly permanent

Mixed hearing loss: that has both conductive and sensorineural components is categorized as mixed. They may have sensorineural hearing loss and then develop a conductive component in addition or vice-versa. Ex: Age-related loss with Ear wax.

Tinnitus refers to the perception of ringing or similar sounds in the ears without any external source. It is typically subjective, meaning only the affected person can hear it, so diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment largely depend on the patient’s self-report.

In India, tinnitus is a common condition, affecting about 7% of the population, and is linked to various physical and emotional health concerns. Approximately 17% of people experience bothersome tinnitus, and around 20% of them suffer from its severe forms.

Often described as a phantom noise, tinnitus can be triggered by exposure to loud sounds, certain medical conditions, and some medications. It may also worsen with caffeine, alcohol, smoking, and other lifestyle factors.

The process of getting a complete diagnostic hearing test is simple, non-invasive and painless. The evaluation is carried out by a qualified audiologist and takes approximately 45 minutes.

A hearing evaluation consists of an ear examination as well as specialized testing to determine the patient’s hearing sensitivity and reaction to speech.

If you are found to have hearing loss, the clinician will walk you through your treatment options.
